Renowned South African actor Ronnie Nyakale, best known for his roles in House of Zwide, Generations: The Legacy, and Yizo Yizo, has opened up about his experience as an e-hailing driver alongside his successful acting career. Despite his fame, Nyakale finds the ride-hailing business to be both fulfilling and eye-opening, according to Sowetan Live
Embracing the E-Hailing Business
Nyakale made headlines late last year when a fan shared a video of him as their driver. While many were surprised to see a well-known actor in this line of work, Nyakale sees it as an opportunity for financial independence. He made the decision five years ago to venture into the business as a way to earn extra income.
“Being a ride-hailing driver is an eye-opening experience. You get to explore places you never thought existed, from lavish estates to the worst roads in townships. You also interact with people from all walks of life, engaging with them on levels you normally wouldn’t as an actor,” Nyakale shared.
He also encourages others to consider alternative income streams. “South Africans worry too much about ‘what people will think’ when it comes to certain jobs. But why care? The most important thing is making money and avoiding poverty. Pride is what stands between many people and success.”

Managing Multiple Income Streams
Nyakale revealed that he initially took up driving to have extra money for personal expenses like alcohol and entertainment, while keeping his acting income for family and bills. Now, he has even bigger financial plans and aims to open a fruit and vegetable market in the near future.
Challenges of Returning to Television
Though he has played numerous iconic gangster roles, transitioning back into television after a long break wasn’t easy. Returning to a new set with House of Zwide came with its own challenges.
“My first day was tough. After spending 10 years on Generations, I was used to a certain routine. It felt like I was new to acting all over again. But then I reminded myself that I had been in this industry for over two decades, and that helped me settle into the role of Sizwe.”
A Private Life Beyond the Spotlight
Despite being a household name, Nyakale prefers to keep a low profile. “I’m not about fame. I don’t enjoy being in the public eye. On my off days, I buy drinks from the tavern and chill at home with friends.”
While balancing long working hours between acting and his ride-hailing job can be challenging, he remains grateful for both opportunities.
With his practical approach to life and financial independence, Nyakale continues to inspire many South Africans by proving that no job is too small when it comes to securing one’s future.
