Comedian Bob Newhart dies aged 94

Bob Newhart, the beloved American stand-up comedian and TV star, has passed away at the age of 94, as confirmed by his publicist Jerry Digney on Thursday. A Chicago native, Newhart initially charted a course in business management and worked as an accountant before transitioning to comedy, famously known for his distinctive dry and deadpan delivery that charmed audiences across the nation.

His career took a pivotal turn after he served in the Korean War, during which he briefly pursued a law degree and eventually returned to accounting, all while honing his comedic talents as a performer and writer. In 1959, setting a timeline for success in comedy, Newhart declared that he would give himself one year to succeed before returning to the accounting profession if necessary.

Fortunately, his gamble paid off when he signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” which made history as the first comedy album to top the sales charts in the music industry.

This landmark achievement earned him prestigious Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Album, paving the way for a prolific television career. Newhart starred in two iconic sitcoms, “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart,” the latter of which is renowned for its unforgettable series finale that cleverly referenced his earlier show.

His guest appearances continued well into his 90s, including memorable roles like Papa Elf in the holiday classic “Elf” and as a recurring character on “The Big Bang Theory.” Throughout his life, Newhart remained a cherished figure in comedy, often reflecting on his experiences with fondness and gratitude, stating, “Comedy has given me a wonderful life.

When I first started out in stand-up, I just remember the sound of laughter. It’s one of the great sounds of the world.” He leaves behind four children and the legacy of his groundbreaking contributions to the world of entertainment, following the death of his wife Virginia in 2023 after six decades of marriage.
